The cost of nursing home care can be a problem. Nursing homes in Massachusetts run approximately $12,000 a month. Most of our clients cannot afford to pay this for a significant period of time. In fact, doing so will impoverish them, quickly wiping out years of savings and even the value of a home.
Most people who need nursing home care will have no choice but to apply for Medicaid or MassHealth benefits. This can be a very difficult process. The application itself is 15-20 pages long, and documentation regarding your income and assets must be provided, including bank statements for the last five years.
We work with those needing care, as well as their adult children. We prepare the application for our clients, and can assist you in obtaining all the required documentation. We can also assist you with the rest of the MassHealth application process, including communication with the case workers and other MassHealth personnel, and can represent you at a Fair Hearing if necessary. This will help reduce the overall amount you and your family will have to pay for care.
Although this preparation work is important, I feel the greatest value we bring is our ability to analyze your situation and determine the strategies to protect assets like your home and your savings from loss to the State. We can certainly save more if there is more time to plan, but we can always save a significant amount - even at the last minute. In most situations, the savings to the family far outweigh the costs associated with our assistance.
